New Delhi/IBNS: India on Friday surpassed China's total COVID-19 tally after it registered a whopping number of 84,712 coronavirus cases across the country, the data from the Union Health Ministry showed.

India now occupies the 11th rank globally in terms of total coronavirus cases.

However in a ray of hope, India's fatality rate is slightly better than China's which stands at 3.2% compared to the latter's 5.5%.

According to the latest data from the Health Ministry, more than 27,000 people have recovered.

The death toll in India due to the contagion stands at 2,649.

Maharashtra remained the most-affected state with 1,576 new cases taking its tally to 29,100 including 1,068 deaths.

Tamil Nadu crossed the 10,000-mark with 434 new cases, while Gujarat witnessed 340 fresh infections to push its tally to 9,932.

India has been under a nationwide lockdown since Mar 25, which got extended twice - first till May 3 and then till May 17- with some relaxations.

The decision to further extend it or end will be soon taken keeping in focus the economic crisis the country stares at.

In an attempt to save the economy in the aftermath of the pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week announced a mega stimulus financial package of Rs. 20 lakh crore aimed to provide relief to farmers, migrants and middle class among others.

While some new cases have been registered in the Chinese city of Wuhan where the first COVID case was reported last year, less than 100 people are now undergoing treatment for the virus in the Asian country.

China has reported 4,633 deaths due to COVID-19 while more than 78,000 people have been discharged.
