India pays tribute to the country's armed forces on Kargil Vijay Diwas
Tweeted President of India, "Kargil Vijay Diwas: Nation's gratitude to the brave men & women of armed forces who keep our country safe & secure."
It was on July 26, 1999, the Indian Army successfully took control of posts at a treacherous high altitude and glaciated terrain across the Himalayas in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, after fighting for 60 days.
"Kargil Vijay Diwas: Salute the martyrs and their families for their ultimate sacrifice," tweeted President Kovind.
Union Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Defence, Arun Jaitley along with the Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa and the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Karambir Singhpaid homage to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Wednesday.
Rahul Gandhi, on his official Twitter handle said, "They laid down their lives, so we may live with our heads held high. On #KargilVijayDiwas we salute the courage&sacrifice of our bravehearts.
According to media reports, it was the ‘Bofors’ gun that helped change the outcome of the war.
Tweeted Devendra Fadnavis, CM Maharashtra, "On #KargilVijayDiwas , Maharashtra salutes our brave soldiers who fought hard and sacrificed their lives to keep our Nation & citizens safe!"
"Remembering our brave soldiers who fought with exemplary valour & sacrificed their lives to bring victory for motherland," tweeted Odisha chief minister Navin Patnaik.
Indian cricketers too have tweeted about Kargil Vijay Diwas>
Tweeted Virdner Sehwag, "18 yrs since #KargilVijayDiwas .Tribute to those who lost their lives for the nation.Bow down to you& Salute to our true heroes,our soldiers."
"Salute to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army for their sacrifices and selflessly protecting our motherland," tweeted Mohammad Kaif.
Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble tweeted, "Remembering and saluting the soldiers for their sacrifices. They define the word 'hero' in every sense.."
Sand artist Sudarsan Pattanaik too created some inspiring sand art on Puri beach to commemorate the day.
