'If govt can run for 5 years, so can our protest': Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait
New Delhi/IBNS: Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait celebrated Diwali at the Ghazipur protest site alongside other farm members and leaders.
He remembered all farmers and soldiers who have lost their lives on the occasion.
The farmers held an event called "do diye, shaheedo ke liye" for soldiers who have been killed in the line of duty.
Speaking to reporters, he said: "If a government can stay for 5 years, the protest can continue for the same time."
He also warned that farmers are on a two-hour standby with their tractors ready.
The farmers, holding protests against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Centre, will complete one year of agitation on Nov 26.
The farmer leaders had the last talk with the government on Jan 22 and they have given an ultimatum till Nov 26 to repeal the laws.
Tikait on Sunday warned the Centre of consequences if protesters are forcibly removed from Delhi borders.
He had said that farmers would then turn government offices across the country into "galla mandis" (grain markets).
In a tweet in Hindi, Tikait wrote: "If there is an attempt to forcibly remove the farmers from the borders, then they will make government offices across the country into Galla Mandi."
Thousands of farmers have been protesting at the three border points in Delhi - Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur- against the Centre's three contentious farm laws since Nov 26, 2020.
