IAF chopper joins flood rescue operation in West Bengal
After the Bengal government requested the IAF to rescue at least 20 people, trapped on the terrace of a damaged multi-storey building in flood-affected Ghatal, the Indian Air Force chopper has been requisitioned.
According to the latest update, at least three IAF rescue-men have been dropped on the rooftop and the recovery operation is currently underway.
As no heavy rainfall was reported, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has reduced the amount of water release from its several dams in West Bengal and neighbouring Jharkhand district.
According to officials, at least 207 relief camps have been opened at the affected areas and nearly 4,45,420 people have taken shelter there. Over 22 lakh people have been affected in Bengal flood.
Officials further stated that at least 28 deaths have been reported so far from several districts.
Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel and several medical teams as well as National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from the Centre are currently continuing rescue operations at the affected zones.
Over 2 lakh hectare crop areas are reeling under water, resulting a price-hike of vegetables in the market.
Several villages in 104 blocks in at least 19 district of the state have been hit by the flood.
Flood situation in five districts of West Bengal, including West Medinipur, Bankura, Howrah, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas, are the worst state, an official told IBNS.
