I quit from RS because I was told to stay away from Punjab: Sidhu

New Delhi, July 25 (IBNS) : Former Test cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday said he resigned from Rajya Sabha as BJP MP because he was asked to stay away from Punjab, while not making any statement on his possibility of joining the AAP.
"How can I do that? I cannot leave my homeland Punjab for self gain. A bird does not even leave the tree in which he has built nest. I love my native land and I cannot do that," he said.

He said no party in the world is above Punjab for him.

He said he won elections four times from Punjab because people trusted him, his demeanor and for his work.

To a question if he is Chief Ministerial candidate for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), he said he wanted to serve only Punjab, avoiding any comment on his joining AAP.

Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who herself is also a BJP member, however, told media earlier that she will not follow her husband's footstep and remains with the party.

According to media reports,  Sidhu, 52, could join the Aam Aadmi Party. The speculation was boosted by AAP chief and  Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's tweet : "People can give their rt hand for an RS seat. Ever seen a sitting RS MP resigning to save his state? I salute Sidhu ji for his courage."

Sidhu has been reportedly upset with the BJP since 2014, when his parliamentary constituency of Amritsar was assigned to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who lost the election.
