Birbhum, Oct 19 (IBNS): Amid ink attack on Jammu and Kashmir lawmaker, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday issued a statement on the rising intolerance by fringe elements in the nation and said humanism and pluralism should not be abandoned under any circumstance.

"Humanism and pluralism should not be abandoned under any circumstance," the President said.

"Assimilation through receiving is a characteristic of Indian society..Our collective strength must to be harnessed to resist evil powers in society," he said.

He said Indian civilization has survived for 5000 years because of its tolerance.

"Indian civilization has always accepted dissent and differences..We have a Constitution that accommodates all these differences," he said.

A group called Hindu Sena on Monday claimed responsibility for the attack on Jammu and Kashmir lawmaker Engineer Rashid in New Delhi.

Engineer Rashid is an independent MLA from the state.

Speaking to reporters Rashid said: "See what is happening here. It is you to decide whether it is correct  or not."

"People talk of Talibanisation of Pakistan. Today , look what is happening here in India," he said.

Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah has condemned the attack.

"Attack on Eng. Rashid is unacceptable & condemned in the strongest possible terms. This climate of intolerance & violence is very worrying," Abdullah tweeted.

Rashid was earlier thrashed for holding a beef party in Srinagar.
