Chennai/UNI: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds battered Chennai and its adjoining districts and parts of coastal and delta districts as the depression moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 14 kmph and lay centered over southwest and adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal about 80 km east-southeast of Chennai and 140 km east-northeast of Puducherry on Thursday.

It is very likely to move northwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts around Chennai, this evening, the India Meteorological Department said in its latest update.

Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places s and extremely heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over North coastal TN, Puducherry, North interior TN, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, extremely heavy rains lashed Chennai and the adjoining Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts throwing normal life out of gear.

Schools and colleges in these four districts have declared a holiday for tomorrow.

Several areas in Chennai city and suburbs were marooned causing inconvenience to the people. At least 10 subways in the city were shut due to water stagnation and traffic was diverted in most places in the city.

Meanwhile, the MeT office said a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over south Andaman sea on November 13, which is likely to move west- northwestwards and become more marked during the subsequent 48 hours.
