Heavy rain disrupts Delhi: 15 flights diverted, traffic snarls across city

At least 15 flights were diverted at the Delhi airport on Tuesday evening as heavy rain lashed the national capital, severely impacting air and road traffic.

According to airport officials, eight flights were rerouted to Jaipur, five to Lucknow, and two to Chandigarh.

Intermittent showers, which began early in the morning, continued throughout the day.

After a brief lull in the afternoon, dark clouds once again covered the sky, followed by a sharp spell of heavy rain, leading to waterlogging and massive traffic jams in several parts of the city.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Airport authorities had issued an advisory, warning that flight operations could be disrupted due to the inclement weather.

“Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience,” the airport said in a statement.

Passengers were urged to check with their respective airlines for real-time flight updates and advised to use the Delhi Metro to reach the airport, as road travel was likely to be delayed due to congestion and waterlogging.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecasted rainfall for the day, issuing yellow and orange alerts for the national capital and adjoining areas.

The IMD cautioned residents to expect moderate rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning.

Despite the inconveniences, the rain brought some relief from the lingering heat in Delhi, where temperatures had hovered above normal in recent days.
