Guwahati, Jun 8 (IBNS): Barely a month after the BJP came into power in Assam and set up a government in the state for the first time, the party gathered more pace as the first BJP Mayor of Guwahati was nominated on Tuesday.

As Abir Patra, a Congressman, resigned from his post of Mayor of Guwahati, it paved a way for BJP's Mrigen Sarania, who was elected uncontested.

The achievement had senior BJP leader and union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu heaping praise on Assam's newly elected Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

"Guwahati Municipal corporation has elected a BJP Mayor for the first time.. Congratulations to Sonowal, CM Assam and party workers of Assam," Naidu tweeted.

The minister also congratulated BJP workers in Manipur, after his party secured 10 seats in the civic polls. BJP had earlier won no seats in Manipur.

"Congrats to the brave BJP workers and leaders who fought and got 10 corporation seats in Imphal for d first time against none earlier," Naidu said.
