Gorkha Janmukti Morcha splits into two parts after its leader suspends 'indefinite strike' in Darjeeling
According to reports, following its Central committee's meeting at Kurseong in afternoon, GJM leader Binay Tamang, who led GJM delegation to Nabanna on Tuesday, declared that there will be no strike in Darjeeling hills from Sept 1 to 12.
"Our dialogues on Gorkhaland demand has started after we attended the first meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (Aug 29) and our second meeting will be held in Siliguri on Sept 12," Binay Tamang told IBNS.
"As we have decided to move forward with our agitation for separate Gorkhaland state on a democratic and peaceful manner, we are suspending our ongoing general strike in Darjeeling till the second all-party meet, which is scheduled to be held on Sept 12," Tamang added.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has welcomed the withdrawal of GJM's month-long shut down in the queen of hills.
Meanwhile, GJM president Bimal Gurung said that he and his party supporters won't be withdrawing the strike.
"Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has been observing indefinite strike in Darjeeling hills for last 80 days and our strike will be continued until our demand is fulfilled," Bimal Gurung said.
Following Bimal Gurung's announcement, a large number of GJM supporters took out rallies in the evening and staged demonstration at several locations in Darjeeling against the Central committee's decision to call of the strike.
