Panaji, May 29 (UNI) Goa Governor Mridula Sinha on Wednesday extended her warm greetings to the people of Goa on the eve of Goa Statehood Day.

In her message the Governor has said, “I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Goa. Thirtieth May is indeed a memorable day in the political history of Goa, for it was on this day in 1987 when Goa became the 25th State of the Indian Union. Achieving Statehood was a long and much-cherished dream of the people of Goa, which was rightfully fulfilled in a truly democratic manner. Statehood gave to the people of Goa a distinct identity and individuality, besides providing them ample opportunities to shape the destiny of their land.”

The Governor said, “Statehood is a joyous occasion when all Goans can recall with pride, enthusiasm and satisfaction, the significant achievements made by them during the past years. It is also a day to renew our thoughts and re-direct our efforts to achieve much greater progress. Goa has immense potential to become a highly developed State.'

'Goans are highly educated, intelligent and enterprising people who are receptive to progressive ideas and meaningful innovations in the governance system and public life. The Government, I must say, is steadfastly working towards achieving greater progress by over-coming many socio-economic challenges. In a democratic system of governance, like ours, we have to constantly face new challenges. However, we should together have the will, the grit and the determination to face these challenges in the most appropriate manner and transform the challenges into opportunities for ensuring gainful achievements,” the Governor said.

“Goa has acquired fame throughout the world for its natural beauty, cultural moorings and the hospitable and peace-loving nature of the people. There has always been an atmosphere of unity and brotherhood among the people belonging to different sections of the Goan society. Social amity and harmony have been the hallmark of the Goan Culture. Many outstanding figures in politics, public life, law and administration, social service, medicine and education, art and culture, have come from this beautiful state of the country. It is my hope that the State will maintain its great traditions and promote them,” Dr Sinha said.
