Friday prayers allowed in Jamia Masjid after 2 weeks

Srinagar, Mar 15 (UNI) Friday prayers were offered in the historic Jamia Masjid on Friday after being disallowed for two weeks as a precautionary measure to avoid any law and order problem.

A police official said there was no restriction in any party of the city on Friday.

Thousands of people joined the Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who addressed the congregation.

Reports of offering of Friday prayers were also received from other parts of the valley.

Friday prayers were not allowed on March 1 and March 8 in Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar, where restrictions were imposed on these days as precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, rejecting security concern and other apprehension of the Mirwaiz, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has directed him to appear before the probe agency at its headquarters in New Delhi on March 18 for questioning in connection with terror funding.

Earlier in reply to similar notice by NIA to appear on March 11 in New Delhi, the Mirwaiz, through his counsel, had cited security concerns and asked that he be questioned in Srinagar. However, a fresh notice was issued to the Mirwaiz by the NIA, asking him to appear at its headquarters in New Delhi on March 18.
