Saharanpur: Four youths were arrested by a team of Saharanpur police from Ambala in Haryana in connection with the attack on Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, police sources said here on Saturday.

Police sources said that the youths were arrested while they were trying to surrender before a court in Ambala district.

"The youths were brought to the Police Lines in Saharanpur where they are being questioned by the senior police officers," they said.

Sources said that the arrested accused include Lavish, Akash and Popat, all residents of Rankhandi village under Deoband police station.

"The fourth youth is said to be a resident of Gondar village in Karnal district of Haryana," they said.

It may be noted that the cavalcade of Azad Samaj Party president and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was attacked by armed miscreants in Deoband area on June 28.

Chandrashekhar (37), who was sitting on the front seat of the vehicle, had a narrow escape as one bullet only brushed his waist and got lodged in the seat.

Chandrashekhar came to Deoband to express his condolence of the demise of the mother of Ajay Kumar, a resident of Gandhi Colony.

While he was returning, a vehicle closed in near Chandrashekhar's vehicle and its occupants opened fire on Bhim Army chief with two pistols. The miscreants later escaped towards Muzaffarnagar after the attack.

The car used in the attack was recovered from Miragpur village in Deoband on the same day. The police arrested a youth, whose ID was recovered from the car used in the attack, was detained by the police from Ghaziabad.

Sources said that investigation revealed the car used in the attack was registered in Ambala.

"It was revealed that the owner of the car had lodged a theft case. It is being said that one of the accused Lavish attacked a jailer in Uttarakhand and was released on bail a fortnight ago," they said.
