Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir joins BJP ahead of General Elections
New Delhi, Mar 22 (IBNS): Just days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Friday.
Gambhir (37), who retired from all forms of cricket last year, was welcomed to the party by Union Ministers and BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad.
"I am inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. Hope I can live up to the expectations and perform the task which will be given by my party," the southpaw from Delhi said.
Gambhir, a Padma Shri Award winner, made his international debut in 2003. He played 58 Tests, 147 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 37 T20Is.
He played for two franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders, and was also the architect of two World Cup wins for India.
A critic of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Gambhir, often tweets in support of the Indian Army.
He was also vocal about several issues concerning Delhi on Twitter.
