Feminist icon Kamla Bhasin dies at 75

New Delhi/IBNS: Feminist icon, poet, author and social scientist, Kamla Bhasin, Saturday passed away at the age of 75.

She was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, reports said.

Bhasin's work focussed on gender, education, human development and the media.

She was the coordinator One Billion Rising, a global campaign to end rape and sexual violence against women.

In 2002, she had left her job at the UN and founded Sangat to work with underprivileged women.

Some of her prominent writings include Laughing Matters, Borders & Boundaries: Women in India's Partition, Understanding Gender et al.

Mourning his demise, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the demise of #KamlaBhasin ji. She was a stalwart of the women's movement in India. My deepest condolences to her family and her loved ones. She will always remain an inspiration for many of us."

Lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan tweeted, "Kamla Bhasin was not only a women's rights activist, but also a philanthropist who set up & helped setting up many fine public Interest institutions like Jagori in HP & School for democracy in Rajasthan. She will be missed by many. May her soul rest in peace."

Actress Swara Bhasker tweeted, "RIP #KamlaBhasin ji.. Thank you for treading the paths we now walk!"
