Farmers' 'peaceful' tractor rally turns violent in Delhi, police outnumbered
New Delhi/IBNS: The 'peaceful' tractor rally by the farmers, who are protesting against the new farm laws, turned violent leading to the vandalisation of public properties and causing injury to policemen on Tuesday, media reports said.
Braving the tear gas, lathicharge by police and breaking barricades, the protesters stormed into the heart of the national capital Delhi as police seemed going outnumbered.
The Delhi Police termed the situation as "unprecedented".
Yogendra Yadav, the political activist and farmers' leader, has urged the protesters to abide by the law.
In some visuals, the dividers on the streets of Delhi were seen vandalised, allegedly by the farmers.
The farmers took over the streets of ITO and ISBT, NDTV reported.
The farmers have reportedly entered into Delhi through the routes which have not been allotted for the protesters.
Though the farmers marched past the Tikri border breaking the police barricades, they were tear gassed at the Delhi-Haryana border, also known as Singhu border, while on their way to the national capital.
The Delhi Police on Sunday allowed the protesters to carry on with their rally but with one condition, that they can't disrupt the Republic Day parade in Delhi.
Earlier, the central government had opposed the tractor rally stating it would be an "embarrassment to the nation".
Since Nov 26, 2020, thousands of farmers have gathered at the border of Delhi, which houses the Prime Minister's residence, protesting against the three new farm laws which was enacted by the Centre through an Ordinance and later controversially passed by Parliament.
