New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS):  Amid reports of alleged EVMs tampering assumes significance as there have been reports from certain places in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar that the EVMs were being transported without security, former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday expressed his concern over the issue.

"I am concerned at reports of alleged tampering of voter's verdict," Mukherjee said in a statement.

"The safety and security of EVMs which are in the custody of ECI is the responsibility of the commission," he said.

The last phase of Lok Sabha polling was held on Sunday.

Counting of votes will take place on May 23.

All major Exit Polls have predicted that PM Narendra Modi and his government will return to power at the Centre.

Meanwhile, the Congress and other Opposition parties met here on Tuesday to discuss political strategies on the outcome of the 2019 general elections.

The meeting attended by senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, BSP leader Satish Mishra, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu among others also discussed about the EVMs and VVPAT issues.

The Trinamool Congress, which has been spearheading the campaign against the alleged possibilities of abuse of EVMs, was represented in the meeting by its Rajya Sabha leader Derek O' Brien.

After the meeting, the sources said, the Opposition leaders are likely to meet the Election Commission and apprise them of their grievances and apprehensions on the EVM issue.

The Opposition parties meeting on the issue of EVMs tampering assumes significance as there have been reports from certain places in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar that the EVMs were being transported without security.

However, the Election Commission has called the reports “baseless” and clarified that all the EVMs and VVPATs which were used in elections were sealed properly in front of parties’ candidates.
