Droupadi Murmu in Angola: India expands trade, energy and people-to-people ties

Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday met Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in Luanda, where the two leaders discussed a broad range of bilateral issues and agreed to deepen cooperation across key sectors, the President’s Office said in a statement.

Murmu said relations between India and Angola were founded on “mutual trust, respect and a shared vision for the prosperity of our peoples.” She welcomed Angola’s ongoing development efforts and noted its role as an important partner in India’s energy security, with the two countries maintaining a growing energy trade.

The leaders agreed to expand trade and investment ties in areas including technology, agriculture, health, defence, infrastructure and people-to-people exchanges, according to the statement.

Two memorandums of understanding were exchanged during the talks — one on cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture and marine resources, and another on consular cooperation.

Murmu also welcomed Angola’s decision to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), both initiatives led by India.

The visit marks the first by an Indian President to Angola. Murmu arrived in Luanda on November 8 as part of a state visit to Angola and Botswana. She is accompanied by Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways V. Somanna, and Members of Parliament Parbhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava and D. K. Aruna.
