Doctors' protest: From within Trinamool, voices against 'leader's inaction'
Kolkata, June 14 (IBNS): At a time West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is trying to both urge and threaten striking doctors across the state to return to work, the protesters have found support from several people close to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Among them are the CM's nephew Abesh Banerjee and daughter of Kolkata mayor and urban development minister Firhad Hakim. Both of them are doctors.
Abesh, son of Mamata's brother Kartick, is a junior doctor at KPC Medical College and Hospital in South Kolkata's Jadavpur. The mayor's daughter Shabba Hakim had graduated from the same college.
While Abesh was part of a group of junior doctors who took out a rally towards NRS Hospital, the epicentre of the agitation, on Wednesday, Shabba, on a Facebook post, wrote about the "inaction and the silence of our leader".
When asked about the instances by a local TV channel, Mamata said: “Don’t ask me these personal questions. They are children. Children get emotional. They do things on the basis of those emotions. They can. Please don’t drag me down to the level of criticising children. Let them.”
The doctors' strike entered the fourth day today with medicos from across the country joining in to show solidarity with their colleagues at NRS Hospital in Kolkata where two doctors were severely beaten up by the relatives of a patient who passed away.
