Demonetisation: Mamata blasts Modi govt after leading march to President
After meeting the President, she flanked by leaders of Shiv Sena as well as leaders like Omar Abdullah of Kashmir said they presented their petition to President Pranab Mukherjee against the government's demonetisation move.
However, Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal did not take part in the same march owing to the presence of Shiv Sena.
"We are against black money. But what the government did is without planning and caused problem to the common people. ATM is now Ayega Toh Milega from all time money that it used to be called," she said.
"This is like Mohammad Bin Tuglaq's planning, leading to constitutional crisis and financial calamity and crisis," said Banerjee.
"We openly told the President that first they should make arrangement. Now it is a big black scheme. Now babies have no milk, there is no medicine. People died of heart attack too. There are starvation deaths too. We are not a plastic economy country. We do not have that mechanism," she said.
"So we approached the custodian of the constitution. We are going for a very bad phase. They have plunged the country into a law and order problem," said Banerjee.
The opposition Trinamool Congress parliamentarians on Wednesday staged a demonstration outside the Parliament in New Delhi opposing the demonetisation move of the Modi government and demanding its rollback.
The MPs shouted anti-government and anti-demonetisation slogans and called the move a financial emergency. Shouting "Nehi Chalega" they demanded that the measure be rolled back immediately.
"The move is only harassing the common people. We want a rollback," said TMC MP Saugata Roy even as the winter session of Parliament began.
TMC joined Shiv Sena, an ally of ruling BJP in the NDA government, to protest since they are on the same page on the issue.
Sena President Uddhav Thackeray earlier discussed the fallout of demonetisation with Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said people in the country are 'suffering' due to the Centre's decision to ban s. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes last week.
The Trinamool Congress supremo said she will meet President Pranab Mukherjee over the issue on Wednesday.
"The situation is serious. Very grim. People are suffering.We will meet the Hon. President tomorrow, no matter what #DeMonetisation," Banerjee tweeted.
On Monday, PM Modi had asked the people to keep patience for 50 more days even as they are having to bear with the immediate consequences of demonetisation that has scrapped old Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 notes.
