Delhi's Jahangirpuri violence: 5 accused charged under stringent National Security Act
New Delhi/IBNS: Five of the accused arrested in connection with the clashes at Delhi's Jahangirpuri on Saturday have been charged under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), which allows detention for up to a year without any charge.
Ansar, the main accused, is among those who face charges under the NSA. The others are Salim, Imam Sheikh or Sonu, Dilshad and Ahir.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday directed the police commissioner to act sternly in the case. 24 people including three juveniles have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Of them, five have been charged under the tough anti-terror law that empowers the government to detain people for months if the authorities are satisfied that they are a threat to national security.
Meanwhile, the police on Monday said the procession, which resulted in violent clashes in the Jahangirpuri area on Saturday, was taken out without permission.
The organisers of the rally allegedly took a route next to a mosque located close to a temple.
The police said as the procession, with people holding up saffron flags, passed by the mosque, the loud volume of religious chants clashed with the azaan or Muslim call to prayers.
Ansar had allegedly started arguing with those participating in the rally.
The altercation soon turned into a clash with both sides starting to throw stones at each other, the FIR says.
The Delhi Police on Monday submitted before the court that Ansar and Aslam were aware of the Shobha Yatra on April 15 and then allegedly hatched a conspiracy.
