Delhi Police says Vigilance branch to look into journalist molestation complaint
New Delhi, Mar 24 (IBNS): Videos of the melee between Delhi Police and student protesters from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi flooded the social media on Saturday, with both sides accusing the other of misconduct.
The protesters claimed that Delhi policewomen mistreated them when they were marching to the Parliament on Friday. The police officials had stopped the protesters near INA Market in south Delhi.
It was also reported that the police roughed up journalists who were covering the incident.
According to media reports, Anushree Fadnavis, a Hindustan Times photojournalist, was not only roughed up by the policewomen but her camera was also snatched away, reports said.
Another report alleged that a woman journalist was molested by a senior police officer. Later on Friday, the Delhi Police said on its official Twitter handle: "In this situation, one female journalist has given a complaint of molestation and the same will be enquired into by the vigilance branch for further action."
On Friday, according to Hindustan Times, the students were marching from JNU to Parliament House demanding action against a varsity professor accused of sexual harassment and against the Central government’s decision to ‘grant autonomy’ to JNU, which the protesters said would lead to privatisation of higher education.
