Delhi Police dismiss viral passport cancellation claim linked to CJP protesters

New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi Police on Friday dismissed viral reports claiming that authorities had decided to cancel the passports of people allegedly involved in violence during the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar, describing the information as "misleading".

In an official post on X, the Delhi Police stated that no decision had been taken regarding the cancellation of passports of CJP protesters and urged the public not to circulate unverified information.

'Misleading claims'

Responding to reports circulating on social media and some news platforms, the Delhi Police clarified that no official announcement had been made regarding passport cancellation.

"No such decision has been announced to cancel the passports of CJP protestors," the Delhi Police said in its post on X.

The police also appealed to citizens to avoid sharing misleading content and instead rely only on information issued through official channels.

Reports claimed passports could be cancelled

Several media reports had earlier claimed that the passports of individuals allegedly involved in the violence during the July 20 'Chalo Sansad' protest could be cancelled.

According to those reports, investigators were identifying suspected participants through CCTV footage, video recordings and other technical evidence, after which action for cancellation of passports might be initiated under applicable legal provisions.

The Delhi Police, however, has now officially refuted those claims.

Violence during 'Chalo Sansad' march

Violent clashes broke out in parts of Delhi on July 20 after CJP supporters launched a 'Chalo Sansad' march towards Parliament.

The confrontation resulted in injuries to both protesters and police personnel. During the unrest, Delhi Police used tear gas and carried out baton charges to disperse demonstrators.

While protesters accused the police of using excessive force, the Delhi Police maintained that its personnel acted with restraint and intervened only to preserve law and order.

Govt, protest representatives likely to meet

As the protests continue, representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party and Union ministers are expected to meet at the Constitution Club of India to discuss the protesters' demands.

The proposed meeting comes after several days of demonstrations over the alleged NEET examination paper leak and related issues.

Sonam Wangchuk breaks fast

The latest clarification by Delhi Police came shortly after activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

Wangchuk had been fasting since June 28, demanding accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh, doctors and Wangchuk's family members were present when he concluded the fast.

During the meeting, Nadda outlined the government's assurances, stating: "The government is positive about not registering cases against those protesting peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and those participating in the march to the Parliament on July 20, 2026."

"The government has already assured its discussions to find solutions to paper leaks and educational reforms for exams in the Parliament," he added. "Besides, the government is also positively considering suitable compensations for the suicide victims of recent NEET paper leaks."

Following the announcement, Nadda offered Wangchuk a cup of soup, formally bringing his hunger strike to an end.

"I'm grateful and happy to break my fast. Thank you," Wangchuk said after ending the protest.
