Cyclone Nilofar to intensify further into severe cyclonic storm: IMD
The new storm has formed in Arabian Sea.
The IMD has warned that the storm will intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hrs.
In a statement, the IMD said: "The cyclonic storm, 'NILOFAR' over west central and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea remained practically stationary and lay centred at 1430 hours IST of 26th October , 2014 near latitude 12.1 degree N and longitude 62.0 degree E, about 1250 km southwest of Naliya (Gujarat), 1310 km south-southwest of Karachi (Pakistan) and 910 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman). It would move initially north-northwestwards during next 48 hrs and then recurve northeastwards towards north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast during subsequent 72 hrs. It would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hrs."
"Under the influence of this system, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls would commence along coastal districts of Saurashtra and Kutch from 30th October morning. Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would commence along and off Gujarat coast from 30th October morning. Sea condition along and off Gujarat coast will be rough to very rough from the same period. Fishermen out at sea along and off Gujarat coast should return to the coast," read the statement.
