Cyclone Fani: Mamata Banerjee cancels rallies for 48 hours, PM Modi reschedules his Bengal visit

Kolkata, May 3 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cancelled all her rallies for next 48 hours while Prime Minister Narendra Modi rescheduled his visit to the eastern state over cyclone Fani.

Banerjee also said her government is monitoring the situation for the whole day.

"Have cancelled my rallies for the next 48 hours because of what could be an impending disaster #CyclonicStormFANI We are monitoring the situation 24x7 and doing all it takes. I appeal to all people to cooperate. Be alert, take care and stay safe for the next two days" she tweeted.

Modi has postponed his May 5 rallies in West Bengal's Tamluk and Jhargram by a day.

The land fall impact of extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani has started this morning and the cyclone Fani is moving north northeastwards and cross Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali close to Puri with maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph.

The Odisha government had already evacuated over a one million people from 14 districts before wee hours today and put them in over 4000 cyclone and other shelter homes.

The storm is likely to impact coastal districts of Odisha including Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Balasore.

In West Bengal, districts of East & West Medinipur, South & North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogly, Jhargram and Kolkata alongwith Srikakulam, Vijayanagram and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh are likely to be affected.
