Kannur, Jul 1 (UNI): Police arrested a CPI (M) local leader for cheating social welfare pensioners by not distributing their monthly pension in this district.

Police said they arrested CPI(M) Thalassery local committee member K.K. Biju (44) of Chirakkara on Sunday, who is also a member of Kannur District Sports Council and general secretary of Thalassery Sports foundation, for cheating around 100 social welfare pensioners at Thalassery.

Biju was produced before court and court remanded him to 14 days judicial custody at Kannur central jail.

The incident came into notice when the pensioners complained that they had not received their monthly pension, which was earlier distributed by Biju who was working as a daily collection agent of Thalassery cooperative rural bank.

It was found that Biju had collected an amount of Rs 6,00,000 from the bank for distributing among the pensioners one month back and returned Rs 31,000 to the bank citing some of the beneficiaries could not be located.

On finding irregularities in distributing the pension amount, the bank authorities filed a police complaint. The anticipatory bail plea of the accused was rejected by the court which led to his arrest.
