New Delhi/Kolkata/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an address to the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Kolkata, on Thursday said the pandemic Novel Coronavirus has given India an opportunity to turn the country into a "self-reliant" one, media reports said.

Modi said, "We have to turn these crises into an opportunity, we have to make it a turning point. Corona has given us the opportunity to turn India self-reliant."

"Our resolve and our strength is the biggest cure for our problems."

Modi said the country will have to make efforts to manufacture and export products which are currently imported from other countries.

"India's goal of self-reliance has been paramount in the policy and practice of the country. The Covid-19 crisis gave us lessons on how to speed up efforts in that direction," the PM said.

"People-centric, people-driven and planet-friendly development has become a part of our governance," he added.

The PM last month unveiled a mega stimulus package of Rs. 20 lakh crore with an aim to make India "self-reliant" or "Aatmanirbhar".

Modi met the ICC at a time West Bengal is battling Covid-19 crisis as well as the aftermath of cyclone Amphan which had devastated the state on May 20.
