Congress questions Modi's 'silence' over Manipur situation

New Delhi/UNI: Congress on Monday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Manipur situation and asked when he will appeal for peace in the Northeastern state.

"Manipur has been burning for 49 days. On day 50, will the PM fly away to foreign lands, without uttering a single word on the ongoing crisis ? When will the self-styled 'Vishwaguru' listen to Manipur Ki Baat?

"When will he speak to the country, to make a simple call for peace?" asked senior Congress leader KC Venugopal, in an apparent reference to Modi's upcoming visit to US and Egypt.

Referring to the appointment sought with the PM by the leaders of 10 Opposition parties from the violence-hit state, Venugopal said, "Since the last many days, Manipuri leaders have been seeking time from the PM to ensure his intervention. Every passing day of "neglect" confirms the belief that PM Modi and the BJP are interested in prolonging the conflict, not finding a solution."

"When will he demand accountability from the Union Home Minister and the Manipur CM for their total failure in bringing peace?" he questioned.

The Congress has been blaming the BJP-led government in Manipur for the present crisis and said it has completely "failed" to control the situation.

The party demanded that an all-party delegation should be allowed to go to Manipur to visit all the affected areas and meet all stakeholders.
