Congress moves Election Commission over bribery video involving Karnataka BJP leader

New Delhi, May 11 (IBNS): The Congress  moved the Election Commission on Friday with a complaint against Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B Sriramulu, who is also a candidate in the May 12 assembly polls, for allegedly negotiating a bribe which has been captured in a video, media reports said.

Just couple of days prior to the polls, the Congress released a video in which Sriramulu could be seen allegedly negotiating a bribe with son-in-law of a former Supreme Court judge, seeking a favourable judgement in an illegal mining case, which involves controversial Reddy brothers.

Interacting with media, Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal said his party has urged the EC to register a First Information Report (FIR) and disqualify Sriramulu from contesting the polls on May 12.

The Congress claimed the video, which has not been verified by NDTV, was shot in 2010.

However, the BJP denied such allegations and termed the video as "fake".

BJP leader Janardhana Reddy is involved is a case involving Obulapuram Mining Company.

The Supreme Court had barred Reddy from campaigning for his party in the Karnataka polls.

Apart from the bribery row, Sibal also took on the BJP for spreading "hatred among people of Karnataka" by airing promos in one local channel to suggest the saffron outfit is with nationalism while the Congress would disintegrate India.

Sibal said: "We told Election Commission that such kind of videos can't be a part of campaigning. Such promos and campaigns should not be allowed by the EC...We told EC that this should stop immediately."
