Kolkata/UNI/IBNS: Plumes of smoke billowed from the banks of the Ganges at Naihati in North 24 Parganas as police started defusing confiscated crackers on Thursday.

Window panes of several houses at Chinsurah, the other side of Naihati, were shattered following the impact of the explosion.

Agitated over the incident, an irate mob put up a road blockade at Naihati, forcing Commissioner of Police of Chandernagar Police Commissionerate Humayun Kabir to rush to the spot.

The infuriated mob also set afire two police vehicles and Kabir faced vehement demonstration following the incident.

Kabir was seen trying to pacify the agitated mob.

Tension was palpable in the area.

Visiting the place of explosion, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Locket Chatterjee said, "The incident must be probed by NIA and the truth has to come out."
