Clash over non-veg food consumption in JNU injures 16, case filed
New Delhi/IBNS: At least 16 people were injured in a clash which broke out inside the Left-ruled Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the national capital Delhi allegedly over the consumption of non vegetarian food during the Hindu festival Ram Navami on Sunday, media reports said.
As per reports, a clash occurred in the mess when non vegetarian food was being served to the students.
The injured include members from the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP, the two groups which were involved in the clash.
Police said they have filed a First Information Report (FIR) on the basis of a complaint lodged by the members of JNUSU, Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) and All India Students Association (AISA) against unknown ABVP students.
The JNUSU has alleged that the members of the ABVP, which is the students' wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha (the ideological parent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party), had stopped students from eating non-veg food and created a violence.
The ABVP, which too has said it will file a complaint with the police, claimed their puja was stopped by the students.
Both sides have accused each other of throwing stones and injuring their members.
Police said they rushed to the campus after receiving a call and ensured no escalation of the situation.
The incident is a deja vu of a 2020 incident where 50 masked people stormed into the campus with rods and beaten up students injuring many including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh.
Earlier, controversy broke out in the national capital after meat shops were ordered for closure in South and East Delhi over the festival Navratri.
The controversy was triggered after South Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Mukesh Suryan's letter demanding the closure of the meat shops in the area due to Navratri.
