Kolkata, Nov 22 (IBNS): West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday night unearthed a child trafficking racket in state's North 24 Parganas district and arrested eight persons in connection with the case, officials said on Tuesday.

According to reports, acting on a tip off, a CID team raided a private hospital at Baduria area of Basirhat sub-division in North 24 Parganas district and busted the racket, which was being allegedly operated since last two years.

"Based on credible source inputs, we conducted raid at a nursing home in Baduria yesterday night and booked 8 persons for running a child trafficking racket there," DIG of CID Bharat Lal Meena told IBNS.

Talking about the modus operandi, a senior CID official said that when a baby was born in the privately-run hospital, its authority declared the baby dead and trafficked the newborn through a local NGO.

Those children were trafficked to other places of West Bengal, other state and sometimes to the USA also, an official said.

"During the raid, we recovered three newborn babies, ready for trafficking, and two of them were placed in a large biscuit packing case," Meena said.

According to the CID, eight arrested are- Nursing home owner Asaduzzaman, owner of local Baidya Clinic Bagbul Baidya, local medicine shop owner Nazma Bibi, key-operator of the local NGO Satyajit Sinha, NGO member Utpala Byapari, quack doctor Amilur Biswas, law clerk of Basirhat court Prabhat Sarkar and his associate Jhantu Biswas, who is a lawyer of the same court.

Law clerk Prabhat Sarkar and his associate lawyer Jhantu Biswas used to make fake documents of the babies and helped the racket in trafficking, officials said.

"The racket, which was being run since last two years, had been trafficked over 30 children to other districts, states and countries," an officer said.

The arrested were produced at a local court on Tuesday and sent to CID custody for further interrogation.

"During interrogation, we have come to know that two more doctors, including a retired physician of Kolkata's R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, were involved in the racket and they will be nabbed very soon," Bharat Lal Meena told IBNS.

"As the matter is under investigation, I won't disclose those doctors' names now. We will catch everyone, involved the case, and keep updating you," Meena added.
