Centre extends CBI, ED chiefs' tenure to 5 yrs
New Delhi/IBNS: The Centre has brought two ordinances to extend the tenures of the CBI and Enforcement Directorate chiefs by three years.
The chiefs of the central agencies presently have a two-year tenure and the extension would lengthen their tenure to up to five years.

President Ram Nath Kovind has signed both ordinances.
The government can extend the tenure of the chiefs of the top agencies by up to three years every year after the completion of two years in office.
"...Whereas the parliament is not in session and the President is satisfied that circumstances exist which render it necessary for him to take immediate action," the ordinances underscore.
The statements further underline that "...no such extension shall be granted after the completion of a period of five years in total including the period mentioned in the initial appointment."
Today's development comes days before the end of the tenure of Enforcement Directorate chief SK Mishra, who took charge in 2018 tenure on November 17, which was extended by another year last year.
