Can't second-guess need of armed forces: Supreme Court allows building strategic feeders close to Indo-China border

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed a central government's plea to construct all-weather roads of 10-metre width as a part of its Double Lane Paved Shoulder (DLPS) for Char Dham road project, including some strategic feeder roads leading to the Indo-China border.

"This court can't second-guess the infrastructural needs of armed forces," the top court said, taking into account that the recent past has thrown up serious challenges to security along the borders.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud passed the judgement.

The bench took into account the balance that needs to be maintained between the requirement of widening strategic roads crucial to national security and key environment issues.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by Citizens For Green Doon. The CFGD had challenged the Union of India's order to widen the construction of all-weather roads on environmental damage.

The Char Dham is a prestigious project for the NDA government.

The apex court passed the judgement, after taking into account the need of a strategic importance for armed forces and keeping in mind the recent developments at the Indo-China border.
