Can't imagine how illicit liquor trade flourished at this scale: Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi, Feb 10 (IBNS): The illicit liquor death tragedy in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh has become a major political issue with the Congress too joining the controversy at a time the SP-BSP combine is already trading charges with BJP, which rules both these states.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday expressed her sadness on the death of over 70 people after consuming spurious liquor in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

"Sad and stunned by the deaths... in Uttarakhand and UP due to illicit liquor. This is condemnable. It couldn't have been imagined that the trade of illicit liquor flourished at such a large scale in the two states," Priyanka said in a statement.

Both the states are ruled by the BJP.

Priyanka Gandhi last month made her formal entry into politics and the Congress party gave her the charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh where the constituencies of BJP big names such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Varanasi) and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath (Gorakhpur) lie.

Police said more than 130 people have been arrested in the liquor death case.

According to NDTV, the death toll touched 75 on Sunday with 32 in Uttarakhand and 43 in Uttar Pradesh.

The BSP and SP, which have joined hands to fight the coming national elections, have been trading charges of negligence over the issue.
