Mumbai, Aug 3 (IBNS): At least two buses and several other vehicles went missing after a bridge over the Savitri River on Mumbai-Goa highway near Maharashtra's Raigad district collapsed on Wednesday, reports said.

Several people, who were travelling in the vehicles, are said to be missing following the mishap.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted: "Spoke to Raigad SP & Collector about bridge collapse on Mumbai-Goa highway.
Administration has rushed to spot for rescue&immediate measures."

"There were 2 parallel bridges : one is a new bridge and one constructed during the British era. The old one got collapsed," he said.

He said the primary reason behind the collapse seems to be the high pressure caused due to flooding of river Savitri due to heavy rains in catchment of Mahabaleshwar.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

"PM @narendramodi offered all help in rescue and relief operations.NDRF teams are already activated.@NDRFHQ ," CMO Maharashtra ‏tweeted.
