Borrowed SUV, muddy roads and screams for help: How Gurugram abduction unfolded

| @indiablooms | Jan 28, 2026, at 01:06 am

A food vendor allegedly kidnapped a 23-year-old woman by forcing her into a borrowed Scorpio SUV in Gurugram on Sunday. The woman was abducted from Leopard Trail, a popular picnic spot in the Aravalli hills.

According to the police, the incident occurred after the woman visited the location with a male colleague on Saturday. The two reportedly spent nearly an hour and a half sitting inside their car when the accused, later identified as Gaurav Bhati (25), approached them and began harassing the woman.

An argument reportedly followed, during which Bhati allegedly snatched the woman’s mobile phone and ran towards a Scorpio SUV. When the woman chased him to retrieve her phone, Bhati allegedly forced her into the vehicle, locked the doors, and drove away.

The victim’s companion immediately alerted the police, who tracked the SUV using the location of the woman’s mobile phone. During the chase, the vehicle got stuck in the mud while navigating through a muddy path in Pandala village.

Police told the media that the accused fled the vehicle after the woman began screaming for help. Officers soon reached the spot and rescued her safely.

Investigations revealed that the Scorpio SUV had been borrowed by Bhati from another food vendor, who told police that Bhati had taken the car claiming he wanted to buy liquor. Medical examinations later confirmed that Bhati was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, NewsX reported.

Bhati was arrested and charged under BNS Sections 137(2) (kidnapping) and 304(2) (snatching). Police said additional charges related to sexual assault will be added once the woman records her statement before a magistrate.

During a visit to the hills to recreate the crime scene, Bhati allegedly attempted to flee but slipped and fell, sustaining facial injuries and a fracture to his right leg. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.

After being produced before a local court, Bhati was remanded to judicial custody.
