Kolkata, Oct 20 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists clashed with the police in Kolkata on Thursday during a protest against an alleged attack on party MP Babul Supriyo.

Singer-turned BJP MP Babul Supriyo was allegedly assaulted by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists on Wednesday at Asansol in Burdwan district of West Bengal.

TMC workers allegedly threw bricks at Babul Supriyo, which hit him on the chest, he claimed.

Protesting agaisnt the incident, the BJP held a rally-demonstration across West Bengal and organized a protest-march in south Kolkata's Rashbehari area.

When the rally was heading towards Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence at Kalighat, police stopped the BJP activists, by setting up three-layer barricades, near Hazra More.

According to city police reports, when BJP workers started breaking the barricades, police tried to prevent them and engaged in a scuffle with the protesters.

BJP supporters allegedly pelted the cops with stones and police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators, officials said.

BJP's National Secretary Rahul Sinha claimed that several BJP supporters were injured in the clash and police had arrested a large number of protesters from the area.

Denying police's allegation, actress-turned-BJP Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly said, "We did not threw stones at the policemen and police's lathicharge on our peaceful rally was completely unprovoked."

"Our women were badly beaten up by male cops here," she added.

However, till the latest update came in, the situation is coming under control and traffic is becoming normal slowly over there.

A heavy police force have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation.

A BJP team is going to meet Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to complain about the incident.
