Bengaluru/IBNS: Basavaraj S. Bommai, who was the home minister in BS Yediyurappa cabinet has been picked up by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to become the new chief minister of Karnataka.

The decision on Karnataka succession came after a meeting of the BJP state legislature this evening following BS Yediyurappa's resignation on Monday.

Bommai will take oath as the new chief minister of the state at 3 PM on Tuesday, media reports said.

A leader of the politically powerful Lingayat like Yediyurappa, Bommai was among the former CM's close confidantes.

Son of Janata Dal's SR Bommai, a former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai joined BJP from the Janata Dal United in 2008.

After the announcement was made, Yediyurappa was the first to congratulate him with a tweet that read: "Congratulations to Shri @BSBommai on being elected as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. I am confident you will lead Karnataka in the path of development and fulfill the aspirations of people of the state."

Speaking to NDTV, Bommai said he "never expected it" and had faith only in his "hard work".

Union ministers-Dharmendra Pradhan and G Kishan Reddy-were present at the state legislature meeting as the central observers.

On Monday evening, Yediyurappa  submitted his resignation to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot at the Raj Bhavan after a two-year-stint as the head of the state.

Yediyurappa reportedly said that he quit "voluntarily" and will continue to remain active in state politics.

The buzz about  Yediyurappa's resignation grew amid resentment against him and his son.

The speculation received a fillip after he visited Delhi earlier this month and met top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
