New Delhi, Jun 19 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s MP from Rajasthan, Om Birla, succeeded Sumitra Mahajan as the Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday.

Birla, who became the 17th Speaker, is a two-time MP and three-time MLA. He now represents the Kota constituency of Rajasthan.

"Om Birla ji will both guide as well as inspire us. I am sure, during his tenure, the House will function effectively and perform for the country, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the lower house of the parliament.

Congress' Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury reminded that Birla is also an agriculturalist. "There are a number of incidents of farmers' suicides. Hopefully Birla ji will throw light on it...The Congress party believes in debate, dissent and decision but the Speaker will also have to maintain the decorum of the House," he said.

Birla also held a number of positions in the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha.

The BJP returned to power for the second consecutive term by registering a landslide victory in the 17th Lok Sabha elections.

In the Lok Sabha, the Congress, however, is not the official Opposition party as it is three short of the required number. The Congress has 52 seats as opposed to BJP's 303.
