Bengal Govt to form new committee for road safety
During a press conference here at state's main administrative building at Nabanna, Mamata Banerjee said, "Chief Secretary will be the chairman of the committee- State Road Safety Authority- and members of several other ministries, including Transport, Finance, Urban Development and Panchayet, will be there in the committee."
"Representatives from Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police and all districts' DM-SPs will be there in State Road Safety Authority," Banerjee added.
The Chief Minister said that state government would take the strictest steps against traffic rule violators.
"To reduce road mishaps, our government has several plans, including taking strict actions against rash drivers or riders and implementation of two new traffic rules- one under police department and another under transport department," Banerjee added.
"I will wait a month for awareness campaigning and then our government will take action against traffic rule violators," she further said.
Mamata Banerjee also said that her government will make different corridors for bikes, heavy goods carriers and emergency vehicles in near future.
"Though it's not possible on narrow roads, we will arrange different corridors for motorcycles, trucks and emergency vehicles on wide and busy roads. But it would take time," she said.
The West Bengal CM also said that accident cases will be treated as criminal offence soon.
"If anyone is killed in road accident, murder charge will be slapped on the accused driver and in case of injury, attempt to murder case will be initiated," Banerjee noted.
"More driving schools will be formed across the state and RTO will be directed to check and examine properly before issuing a new driving license," she added.
During the press conference, CM Mamata Banerjee said that a driving license and permit could be canceled after violating traffic rules for three times.
Talking about drink-n-drive, Banerjee said, "Either drink or drive. Don't drive after having alcohol."
However, CM and state police's DG Surajit Kar Purakayastha confirmed that there will be no problem in getting insurance after a car accident.
Since July, state government has started an initiative for road safety- Safe Drive Save Life- and implemented 'No Helmet No Petrol' rule for bikers.
