Bengal bandh: Suvendu Adhikari claims gunshot fired at BJP leader in Bhatpara

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has claimed one of his colleagues from the Bharatiya Janata Party was targeted by a Trinamool Congress worker in trouble-ridden Bhatpara in the early hours of a 12-hour state-wide bandh called by his outfit on Wednesday.

The 6 am-6pm bandh has been called by the BJP in protest against police's alleged assault on the students and protesters who marched to the state secretariat Nabanna.

The march was called by the students under the banner of 'Chhatra Samaj' demanding justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is facing a massive public ire over the heinous crime that shook the nation.

In a video shared by Adhikari on his X handle, a man was seen firing at a car leaving the bullet hit the windshields.

The Leader of Opposition wrote, "TMC goon opening fire on eminent BJP Leader Priyangu Pandey's vehicle at Bhatpara. The driver of the vehicle is shot.

"This is how Mamata Banerjee & TMC are trying to force BJP off the street. The Bandh is successful and people have supported it wholeheartedly. The toxic cocktail of Police & TMC Goons won't be able to scare BJP."

BJP leader Arjun Singh is a former MP from Bhatpara, which is often marred by political violence.

In some other incidents, BJP leader Roopa Ganguly was detained in Gariahat as she was out on streets in favour of the bandh, which is opposed by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Not just Ganguly, several other BJP leaders and workers have been detained by police who have ensured normal lives are not affected by the bandh.

Railway tracks were seen blocked by BJP workers at several places disrupting the train services.

The TMC, which has had a stance against the bandh since coming to power in 2011, on Tuesday cleared that the administration will ensure normal lives are not affected due to bandh.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra slammed the BJP over the bandh in an X post saying, "BJP goons forcefully shutting high schools today. Don’t expect more from party whose leader has mystery degree in Entire Political Science. Thank you BJP for reinforcing why Bengal shuns you. Jai Shri Galgoatias."
