BD Mishra appointed new LG of Ladakh amid protests over statehood demand

Leh: The Centre on Sunday appointed BD Mishra, a former brigadier of the Indian Army, and present Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, as the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

The development came amid agitation demanding statehood and special status under the sixth schedule of the constitution for Ladakh.

On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Radha Krishna Mathur quietly left his office in Leh after saying goodbye to his staff on Saturday, NDTV reported.

On Sunday morning, a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignations of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and LG of Ladakh Radha Krishna Mathur.

Media reports said it is still not clear whether Mathur was asked to resign or he chose to step down on his own amid ongoing agitation by the Ladakhi people.

According to the report, he packed his bags without citing any reason for the sudden decision and left after informing the staff.

Radha Krishna Mathur was appointed the first Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh after Jammu and Kashmir was stripped of its statehood and divided into two union territories in August 2019.
