New Delhi, Mar 5 (IBNS): Attacking former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP leader and Union Ministe Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said the banking system of the country was dented under the 'so-called economist'.

The BJP is facing criticisms from oppositon over recent banking frauds.

"Under the so called economic then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the entire banking system went haywire due to all kinds of interference with it," Prasad said while addressing a press conference here.

He even accused that former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram had helped Gitanjali Jewellers in 2014.

"On 16 May 2014 when UPA govt had lost the general elections, the outgoing FM P. Chidambaram cleared 80-20 benefit to Mehul Choksi's company, Geetanjali Gems. Will Rahul Gandhi & P Chidambaram tell the nation if wasn't blatant favouritism, mala fide intent and rampant corruption?," Prasad said attacking the Congress and the former UPA government.

The UPA government had launched the 80:20 scheme in 2013.

It was introduced at a time when the government was attempting to curb gold imports to tackle the current account deficit.

As per the scheme that was introduced by the former government,  private traders were permitted to export 20 per cent of the imported gold and then retain the remaining of it for domestic use.

After winning the polls in 2014, the NDA government came to power and scrapped the rule.

Prasad attacke the Congress at a time when  multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, involving celebrity jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, has hit the political scenario of the country.

Prasad even called the Congress as 'anti-reform'.

"Rebuffed and rejected by the people, the Congress party has resorted to spreading lies and deceit. They have shamelessly spread rumours about FRDI Bill and Doklam," he said.

He said: "Let Congress party continue to spread lies, BJP will expose them; let Congress party spread fear, BJP will inspire people to become fearless."

Prasad attacked the Congress and said: "Congress party has issues with technology since technology brings transparency."
