Avalanche hits Army post in Kargil, one soldier missing
New Delhi, Mar 20 (IBNS): A month after the deadly Siachen avalanche, another soldier has gone missing following an avalanche that hit an Army Post in Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir, media reports said.
Rescue operations are currently underway to locate the soldier.
The avalanche hit the Army post, located at an altitude of 17,500 feet, on Thursday.
Two soldiers on surveillance duty were swept away after the avalanche had hit, which was triggered by a minor earthquake.
One of them was rescued in the search operations launched immediately after the incident happened and is now recovering.
On Feb 3, ten soldiers of an Army Post located at an altitude of 19600 feet were killed by a massive avalanche. The bodies of nine of them were recovered after dangerous rescue operations which lasted for two weeks.
One solider, identified as Lance Naik Hanamanthapa, was found buried alive under 25 feet of ice during a miraculous rescue operation but later succumbed to his injuries at a Delhi hospital.
