At least 26 dead, over 40 injured in massive fire at four-storey building in Delhi

New Delhi/IBNS: At least 26 people died and over 40 were injured in a massive fire that broke out at a four-storied building in west Delhi on Friday, reports said.

The police involved in the rescue operations are apprehensive that the toll might go up. Officials said one floor is yet to be searched.

More than 40 people sustained burn injuries and have been hospitalised.

Around 60-70 people have been rescued from the building so far, the police said.

Meanwhile, about 30 fire tenders are still at the spot and ambulances are stationed for the rescue work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet wrote: "Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery."

The commercial building which caught fire is located near Mundka metro station in west Delhi.

Mourning the death, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "Shocked and pained to know abt this tragic incident. I am constantly in touch wid officers. Our brave firemen are trying their best to control the fire and save lives. God bless all."

A compensation Rs. 2 lakh each will be given to the families of those who have lost a member while Rs. 50,000 will be given to those injured, announced the Prime Minister's office.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Extremely shocked and saddened by the sudden news of loss of a huge number of lives due to a tragic fire incident in Delhi today.  Heart - felt condolences to the relatives of victims. Pray for quick recovery of the injured."

According to fire department officials, information was received about the blaze at 4.40 pm following which 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately, said reports.

Police officers said the fire started on the top floor and has engulfed the whole building.
