Assam BTC election result: BJP, UPPL and GSP likely to form next council

The BTC election result was declared late Saturday night and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has emerged as a single largest party by winning 17 seats, but Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF would not able to collect the magical number 21 to retain in power.

According to the Assam State Election Commission report, BPF won 17 seats while United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) bagged 12, 9 by BJP and one each by Congress and Gana Shakti Party (GSP) led by Kokrajhar Lok Sabha MP Naba Kumar Sarania.

After declaring the BTC results, UPPL president Promod Bodo, GSP president Naba Kumar Sarania, BJP’s state president Ranjit Kumar Dass and BJP general secretary Dilip Kumar Saikia rushed to Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s official residence in Guwahati and met in a crucial meeting to discuss the formation of the new council in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Polling for 40 seats of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) was held in two phases on Dec 7 and 10 with 79 per cent voter turnout being recorded.

After signing the Bodo peace accord with the All Bodo Students’ Union and some factions of the insurgent group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB early this year and formation of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), it is the first election in BTAD.

Ahead of the assembly polls in Assam which is scheduled in 2021, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election has become as the semi-final of 2021.

BJP had contested against its own ally party Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in this election.

BPF is an ally party of the BJP-led Assam government since 2016 and the party had ruled in BTAD in last 15 years.
