New Delhi, Dec 19 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi has kept his promise of waiving farm loans in the three states where the party came to power in the recently-concluded Assembly elections.

The Congress has formed the governments in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, all of which were ruled by the BJP.

"It's done! Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh have waived farm loans. We asked for 10 days. We did it in 2," Rahul tweeted on Wednesday night, shortly after the third state, Rajasthan, made the farm loan waiver announcement.

On Wednesday, Ashok Gehlot, chief minister of Rajasthan, the third state to make the farm loan waiver announcement, said: "All loans are waived for those defaulting on farm loans from cooperatives and banks till 30.11.18."

"While for cooperatives, the entire loan is waived, the waiver amount is up to Rs 2 lakh for banks," he said.

"Congress president Rahul Gandhi had promised during the election campaign that if we won, we could waive farm loans within 10 days of forming the government. We had also made the promise in the manifesto," he said, adding the the previous BJP government had not delivered on their promises.

The move will cost the Rajasthan government Rs 18,000 crore.

Following the Congress governments' action in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the BJP governments in Assam and Gujarat on Tuesday waived rural electricity bills and farm loans in the two states.

The waivers cost the Gujarat and Assam governments Rs 650 crore and Rs 600 crore respectively, media reports said.

Following the developments in Gujarat and Assam, Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to take a jibe at the BJP governments in the two states and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The Congress party has managed to wake the CMs of Assam & Gujarat from their deep slumber. PM is still asleep. We will wake him up too," he said.
