New Delhi/IBNS: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was carried away by the wealth, said social activist Anna Hazare after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was swept away from power in the national capital by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to the media, Anna Hazare said, "I have always been saying that a candidate's conduct and thoughts should be pure and life should have sacrifice to secure the faith of the voters.

"I told this to Arvind Kejriwal repeatedly but he didn't pay heed to it. Instead, he focussed on liquor for the sake of money. He got carried away by wealth."

As per the trends of the Delhi poll results, the BJP is leading in 48 seats paving way for its return to power after 27 years.

The AAP, which had won 62 out of 70 seats, is lagging behind with only 22.

Kejriwal and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia have been defeated in the New Delhi and Jangpura assembly constituencies respectively while current Delhi CM Atishi is trailing in Kalkaji.

The elections were held on February 5.
