New Delhi, Oct 9 (IBNS) The Territorial Army (TA) celebrated its 66th Raising Day on Friday.

A large number of Territorial Army resources are deployed in Jammu & Kashmir for supporting the Army in combating insurgency & terrorism in the state. These include the Home & Hearth units which were raised on 'Sons of Soil' concept and have 100% personnel from J&K only.

A total of six of Home & Hearth battalions, six Infantry TA battalions and many Infantry TA companies from other battalions of TA are deployed in the state of J&K.

Some new units of TA have also been raised recently.  It was heartening to see the overwhelming response of the youth from J&K to come forward for the recruitment rallies displaying their zeal and enthusiasm for serving the nation.

A total of 15 recruitment rallies were conducted during the year and few are planned in the coming days. A total of 1758 youth from J&K were selected during the year to serve TA. The relentless pursuit of Territorial Army in the service of nation has been widely acclaimed by the civil population, civil administration and the defence forces in J&K.

Territorial Army (TA) also known as the 'Citizen's Army' was raised on 09 Oct 1949 by Shri Rajgopalachari, the first Indian Governor General of India.

Since, then its size, role and task have increased manifold. TA is an unique concept wherein any citizen of the country may volunteer to join the TA while continuing with his primary vocation and serve the Army on 'As Required' basis. The flexibility has made TA extremely popular amongst the citizens of the country over a period of time. TA personnel have proven their mettle under trying conditions and have brought glory to the Army.
